Even though it was unbeknownst on his part, the high priest Caiaphas gave a very telling and doctrinally precise prophecy of the death of the Lord Jesus Christ. It was expedient for one man to suffer and die instead of the larger nation as a whole suffering the same penalty individually. That is true of the work of Christ – one man as the representative and substitutionary sacrifice died so that all the rest of God’s children would not have to bear that penalty.
